Our flight leaves at 7:05AM, but of course is delayed. No biggie, we only get into Rome about 20 minutes late and catch the first train into the city. First stop, the Vatican. Matt and I have a map we printed off the internet and what we want to do all mapped out. Too bad nothing in this city is familiar and we get so lost! About two hours after we get off the train we are finally in front of the Vatican. (Funny thing about Rome: there are so many historical sites, that every time we got lost we ended up in front of something we weren’t supposed to see until later in the day or the next day. By the end of the trip, we had seen everything at least twice)
After touring the Vatican and visiting the Sistine Chapel (couldn’t take any pictures…sorry), we headed over to St. Peter’s Basilica. This is where the pope comes out to address the city.
It was finally time to check into the hotel, but first we had to stop for lunch at the open market Campo dei Fiori.
After a late lunch, some gelato and a short break at the hotel, we headed back out to see the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon, and the Trevi Fountain.
Finally, we ended our night with dinner at the Piazza Navona… I had a half lobster with thin spaghetti and Matt had spaghetti and meatballs. We ate breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner every day… Italy’s food blows anything else we have ever had away!
